The Wealth Ladder: Nick Maggiulli's 1% Rule and 0.01% Rule Explained
How Nick Maggiulli's six net-worth tiers, the 1% rule for opportunities, and the 0.01% rule for daily spending can guide financial decisions at every wealth level.
The Wealth Ladder: Nick Maggiulli's 1% Rule and 0.01% Rule Explained
Most personal finance advice assumes everyone should follow the same rules regardless of how much they're worth. Nick Maggiulli's book The Wealth Ladder argues the opposite: the right financial strategy depends heavily on which "rung" of the wealth ladder you're standing on.
The Six Levels of Wealth
Maggiulli divides net worth into six tiers, each roughly a 10x jump from the last:
| Level | Net Worth Range | Name |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $0 – $10,000 | Paycheck-to-Paycheck |
| 2 | $10,000 – $100,000 | Grocery Freedom |
| 3 | $100,000 – $1,000,000 | Restaurant Freedom |
| 4 | $1,000,000 – $10,000,000 | Travel Freedom |
| 5 | $10,000,000 – $100,000,000 | House Freedom |
| 6 | $100,000,000+ | Philanthropic Freedom |
Each tier corresponds to a different primary constraint and therefore a different strategy. At lower tiers, earned income and cost control dominate outcomes. At higher tiers, investment returns dominate.
The 1% Rule: Deciding Whether an Opportunity Is Worth It
Maggiulli's 1% Rule offers a filter for opportunities such as a new job, a side hustle, or freelance work: pursue it only if it would grow net worth by at least 1%.
For example, at a net worth of $200,000, an opportunity must be worth at least $2,000 to clear the bar. Below that, the time required generally exceeds the expected benefit.
As net worth grows, the 1% bar rises proportionally. An opportunity that is material at Level 2 may be negligible at Level 4.
The 0.01% Rule: A Daily Spending Allowance
The companion rule addresses spending. The 0.01% Rule states that spending 0.01% of net worth per day does not materially affect long-term wealth accumulation.
At a $1,000,000 net worth, that is $100 per day, approximately $3,000 per month. Because the allowance scales with net worth, it adjusts automatically as wealth changes.
Applying it
The Wealth Ladder Calculator applies both rules: enter net worth to determine the current tier, the daily spending allowance, and whether a prospective opportunity clears the 1% threshold.
