Key Retirement Ages: What Unlocks and When

Retirement planning runs on birthdays. Specific ages unlock contributions, open withdrawal windows, start benefits, and trigger mandatory distributions. Missing one has a cost. Claiming Social Security without knowing the maximum age leaves money on the table. Missing the required withdrawal start brings penalties. The Key Ages calculator maps all eight onto a birth year.

The accumulation unlocks: 50 and 55

At 50, catch-up contributions unlock. Workers 50 and older may contribute above the standard 401(k) and IRA limits each year. This provision exists because late-career earnings are typically the highest, and the remaining compounding window is short. Raising contributions at 50 captures both.

At 55, the Rule of 55 opens an early exit. Workers who separate from service in or after the year they turn 55 may withdraw from that employer's 401(k) without the 10% early-withdrawal penalty. The rule applies per employer plan. It does not extend to IRAs. Anyone planning an early exit should confirm the separation timing against this birthday before acting.

Penalty-free access: 59½

At 59½, the 10% early-withdrawal penalty ends for retirement accounts generally.Withdrawals remain taxable as ordinary income where applicable. The penalty end does not mean withdrawals are advisable. Each dollar removed stops compounding. The spend-down step models what a withdrawal schedule does to longevity across market scenarios.

The Social Security window: 62 to 70

Benefits can start at 62, permanently reduced. Full retirement age falls at 66 to 67 depending on birth year. Births from 1943 through 1954 carry a full age of 66. Each year from 1955 adds two months, reaching 67 for 1960 and later. Delayed retirement credits accrue to 70 and stop. Claiming later than 70 gains nothing. The latest age for Social Security is therefore 70, and the decision between 62 and 70 trades early cash flow against a permanently higher inflation-adjusted benefit.

The break-even framing helps. Later claiming costs years of foregone checks and buys a higher lifetime benefit conditional on longevity. Households with shorter life expectancy collect more by claiming early. Households with longer expectancy collect more by waiting. The calculator shows where each birthday falls. The lifetime income step places the chosen claim age on the income timeline.

Health coverage and mandates: 65, 73, 75

Medicare eligibility begins at 65. Enrollment timing carries its own late penalties, separate from retirement accounts. Coordinate the retirement date with the coverage start.

Required minimum distributions begin at 73 for births from 1951 through 1959, and at 75 for 1960 and later. The withdrawal is mandatory whether the cash is needed or not. Amounts follow IRS divisors applied to the prior year-end tax-deferred balance. Excess over spending need is reinvested in the simulation rather than treated as spending. The RMD schedule appears automatically on the lifetime income timeline from 73.

Are savings on pace: Fidelity checkpoints

Fidelity's rule of thumb holds 1x salary saved by 30, 3x by 40, 6x by 50, 8x by 60, and 10x by 67. These multiples assume saving roughly 15% of income annually from 25 with average market returns. They are checkpoints, not guarantees. Market sequences, career breaks, and late starts all move the outcome.

The calculator compares current retirement savings against each reached checkpoint and prices the future ones. A shortfall at 40 compounds into a larger shortfall at 50, which is precisely why the checkpoints exist early. The savings answer in the spend-down step converts any gap into a required annual savings figure through the selected withdrawal method.

Putting the ages together

Enter a birth year in the Key Ages calculator to see all eight milestones with countdowns, add a spouse birth year for a side-by-side view, and check savings against each Fidelity checkpoint. Then carry the claim age and savings target into the plan.
